| 'Edible pomegranate' by Coral Guest |
This exhibition will feature paintings from the Shirley Sherwood Collection of fruit and plants which originate from across the world. Works on display by artists such as Susannah Blaxill, Brigid Edwards, Coral Guest, Kate Nessler and Rosie Sanders will showcase the diversity and breadth of the Shirley Sherwood Collection.
The development of fruit is shown in many of these paintings and some paintings on show are the culmination of months of observation, waiting for a pear or apple to ripen so that every stage can be shown.
These works will be on display together with a selection of plates of fruit from the 1863 first edition of Berthe Hoola van Nooten’s Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Chosis de la flore et de la pomone de l’Ile de Java. Berthe Hoola Van Nooten was a Dutch botanical artist, born in 1817, working in Java and Southeast Asia as a plant collector and artist.
The exhibition will also include items illustrating fruit, from Kew’s Library, Art and Archives collections. Early volumes from the library collection dating from the 18th and 19th centuries will be on display, such as Pierre-Joseph Redouté’s Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs and Maria Sibylla Merian‘s Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium. Paintings exhibited will include works by Georg Dionysius Ehret and by Indian artists from the Company School. There will also be a small display of fruit models from Kew’s Economic Botany Collection.
